Awhi Flora – Crafting with Augmented Reality

Awhi_Flora was a augmented reality experience based on New Zealand native flora and included 3D animated flowers and physical seed markers.

Awhi_Flora existed as a tool to support community engagement, to open minds and weave together different realities.

Thanks to the late Piri Mirearai’s strong facilitative support and cultural advice, Awhi Flora allowed people to come together around a table and craft interdimensional accessories using wooden AR seed makers and beads. Young and very old created augmented reality necklaces, wristbands while they learned how this technology (and their phone!) works and what it could be used for in their own communities. The flowers sung, spoke and moved when held under our AwhiFlora app.

It was tested and developed as part of our Augmenting Elders programme and then immediately put to use in the community as part of the Accelerating Auckland Mangere Park Jam AwhiWorld workshop. Thanks to another AwhiWorld partner, Tracey Gayner from Simple Steps, AwhiFlora workshops in South Auckland have catered to over 1000 people from a wide range of ages and nationalities, but predominantly from different Pacifica communities. The AwhiFlora App has now been de-commissioned and dedicated to Mama Piri’s memory.
